Eric Clapton Steve Winwood 2009 Tour
Published by Jarrod Vrazel on Thu May 14, 2009
ZRock image

After a stunning collaboration at the Chicago Crossroads Guitar Festival in July of 2007 and much speculation, Steve Winwood and Eric Clapton announced three eagerly anticipated concerts at New York’s Madison Square Garden. Those shows featured the artists performing together in a varied set list with Blind Faith classics and solo hits from each artist. Critics acclaimed the shows as historic and some of the best Clapton Winwood work ever. The tour promises more of the same collaborative musicianship that made these men legendary award-winning artists.

Both Winwood and Clapton have long and prestigious musical careers with countless honors and awards to their names. Their musical paths connected in 1969 with the formation of Blind Faith, a group that pioneered the fusion of rock and blues into tremendous studio and stage success. Despite critical and popular acclaim, the band was short-lived with only one album and a brief 1969 tour that debuted July 12 at Madison Square Garden and ended August 24th in Hawaii. Since that final show, Winwood and Clapton have remained friends, but have only performed together a few times over the years for an occasional song at a charity event. The 2008 Madison Square Garden shows were the first full Winwood-Clapton concerts in 40 years. Additionally, 2009 marks the 40th anniversary of Blind Faith and 40 years since they performed to over 100,000 people in Hyde Park, London.

Steve Winwood is currently signed to Columbia Records and released an album of new music, NINE LIVES in 2008. Eric Clapton’s compilation album Complete Clapton was released in 2008 on Reprise Records. The duo’s captivating performance at the 2007 Crossroads Guitar Festival in Chicago can be seen as part of a 2-disc DVD available now from Rhino Entertainment. A forthcoming 2-disc DVD/CD of the duo’s Madison Square Garden shows will be released this Spring.

Rock Prophecies will screen in competition at the 2009 Sonoma International Film Festival on Friday, April 3, 2009 at 6:00pm at the House of Docs (574 First St. E.) in Sonoma, CA. A brief Q&A with Robert Knight will follow. A second screening is set for Sunday, April 5 at 12pm at the House of Docs. “It’s a true story about having a dream, and how to fulfill that dream,” Knight says of Rock Prophecies. “For that matter, it’s the story of fulfilling other peoples’ dreams, too.” While building relationships with established guitar royalty, Knight has always managed to keep his finger on the cultural pulse, leaping at the opportunity to photograph and promote emerging talent such as blues-rock star Joe Bonamassa, and rising bands Sick Puppies, The Answer and Panic At The Disco. Since Robert became involved, Sick Puppies has scored a hit single and viral video smash with “All the Same” and “Free Hugs,” The Answer has opened for AC/DC’s 2009 world tour, and Panic at the Disco’s debut album, A Fever You Can’t Sweat Out, has sold 2.2 million copies.

In addition to the film, Robert Knight will be holding a book signing on Saturday, April 4 at 2pm at Readers Books in Sonoma (130 E. Napa St.). The new book, "Rock Gods: Forty Years of Rock Photography" features a collection of Knight’s work with over 200 full-color images, plus commentary from artists, that Knight photographed during the past four decades.

Rock Prophecies, a documentary film that puts legendary rock photographer Robert Knight in front of the lens, made its world premiere at the AFI Dallas International Film Festival on March 27-28, 2009. A film by John Chester and produced by Tim Kaiser, Rock Prophecies features interviews and performances from Jeff Beck, ZZ Top, Def Leppard, Slash, Carlos Santana, Rick Nielsen of Cheap Trick, and Steve Vai, among others. In conjunction with the world premiere, Knight signed copies of his book "Rock Gods: Forty Years of Rock Photography" at Borders Books in Dallas.

The film debuted to rave reviews and fans gave Knight a Texas-sized rock star welcome and standing ovation. Kaiser has proclaimed Knight to be the “the Forrest Gump of Rock ‘n Roll” for his ability to capture history in the making, namely the last photo ever taken of Stevie Ray Vaughan and some of the earliest of Jimi Hendrix and Led Zeppelin. “A lot of people take great pictures,” says Kaiser, “but Robert just captures history again and again.”

Queensr˙che's American Solider concept album set for release March 31, 2009, envisions war through the eyes of a soldier. The ambitious album encompasses a dozen songs inspired by numerous interviews with veterans conducted by Geoff Tate, the group's singer and chief songwriter, who was intent on telling their story using their words. After speaking with soldiers who served in various conflicts -- from World War II to Iraq -- Tate turned their firsthand experiences from the frontlines into an unflinching musical examination of the life of a soldier and the consequences of war.
