It’s a bittersweet time to be a metalhead. On one hand, thrash legends Megadeth are currently firing on all cylinders, riding a wave of historic commercial success. On the other hand, frontman Dave Mustaine has made it crystal clear: the end is officially near.
If you’ve been living under a rock, here is how the thrash titans are conquering the world one last time.
A Career-First Milestone on the Charts
Earlier this year, Megadeth shocked the music world when their 17th studio album, simply titled Megadeth, conquered the charts. The record scored the band their first-ever #1 album on the Billboard 200 and mirrored that history-making achievement overseas by snagging their first-ever #1 spot on the Australian ARIA charts as well. For a band four decades into their career, hitting peak commercial domination now is a testament to the absolute loyalty of the Cyber Army and the timelessness of heavy thrash metal.
The Final Album and Farewell Tour
But that #1 spot comes with a catch. Mustaine previously revealed that this self-titled masterpiece will officially be the final Megadeth studio album of his career. Delivering the news via his iconic alter ego Vic Rattlehead, Mustaine noted that he wanted the band to go out on their own terms, at the absolute top of their game.
The band is currently keeping the engine hot with a summer run across North America, but the real madness begins this November when Megadeth joins forces with Iron Maiden for the massive Run For Your Lives World Tour.
“In My Darkest Hour” Memoir
The victory lap doesn’t stop on the stage, either. Fans looking for an unblinking, behind-the-scenes look at Mustaine’s chaotic and revolutionary life will get it on September 8, when his brand-new memoir, In My Darkest Hour: A Memoir by Dave Mustaine, officially hits shelves.
Mustaine recently summed up the band’s final era beautifully:
“We started a musical style, we started a revolution, we changed the guitar world… Don’t be mad, don’t be sad, be happy for us all, come celebrate with me.”
Are you catching Megadeth on their farewell run this summer or fall? Get your tickets before they’re gone, because when Dave hangs up the guitar, a massive piece of rock history goes with him.
