System Of A Down’s new album Hypnotize debuts at Number One on the Billboard charts with first week sales of over 320,185. The new album continues follows the success of part one of the Mezmerize/Hpnotize double ablum set, Mesmerize, which debuted at Number One in May. System of a Down is the first band in the history of the chart to score two No 1 debuts with new studio albums in a single calendar year.
Hypnotize, the fifth studio album from System Of A Down, is the group’s third to debut at No 1. Toxicity, the watershed release that brought the band its first major success, debuted at No 1 the week ending September 9, 2001 with first week’s sales of 222,037. The album has gone on to sell more than 6 million copies worldwide. Global sales for System Of A Down albums and singles now total more than 16 million records.

Guitarist Daron Malakian, who coproduced both albums with Rick Rubin, said that the band’s appeal is that they don’t compromise. What we’re doing right is basically not compromising our real emotions through our music, Malakian said. We’ve stayed honest–you know, when I’m sitting at home writing the songs, I don’t sit there and say, Well, what’s gonna be the hook? and What’s not gonna be the hook? I mean, sometimes the songs just, like, fly right through me, and I have no idea where they came from. I didn’t think about it at all.
