Velvet Revolver ignited Houston Friday night in an electrifying display of muscianship and teamwork, proving what it means for true musicians to be atop the Billboard charts once again: no turntables, no bling-bling, no bullshit – just true American rock n roll at its best.

Loud and proud as their debut album, Contraband, debuts on the Billboard charts at number one, the show was filmed for a live DVD. Velvet Revolver fired off three tunes from the new album Sucker Train Blues , ’do It For The Kids , and Headspace. STP’s Crackerman was followed by Illegal I Song. The crowd was then whipped into a frenzy on GNR’s It’s So Easy , with Slash and co. mesmerizing the Houston crowd with a no holes barred blast from the past.

Scott Weiland was in top form, seeminlgy having recovered from the ailment that forced postponement of the Austin show. Scott commented how Stone Temple Pilots had ended in the dressing room of this very venue and that the crowd was witnessing a ’rebirth. He also thanked the fans for their support and stated that, several years ago, having a number one album wouldn’t have meant much for him, but now it means everything.

Fall to Pieces was followed by Big Machine. The band closed out the set with Set Me Free after Slash thanked Houston for helping make it a success for the Hulk soundtrack.

The first encore consisted of GNR’s Used to Love Her , the current smash hit, Slither and STP’s Sex Type Thing.

The band returned to bring the house down once again with Matt Sorum’s You Could Be Mine drum into leading into a rousing version of GNR’s Mr. Brownstone followed by Nirvana’s Negative Creep.

What sets this band apart is the teamwork: there is no ’star of the show hogging the spotlight – the rythym section of Duff and Matt, coupled with Slash and Dave on guitar and Scott on vocals, work together like true champions. And this is one championship run that has just begun…
