One was Metallica's first music video. Filmed in Long Beach, California, the song's theme and lyrics are based on Dalton Trumbo's 1939 novel Johnny Got His Gun, telling the tale of a soldier who is hit by an artillery shell and loses his limbs, eyes, ears and mouth. The video includes footage from the 1971 Johnny Got His Gun movie based on the novel.
As the third single from And Justice For All, One was Metallica's first Top 40 hit and ranked Number Two on the 1990 ZRock 1000.
