Rock Christmas Music

Rock Christmas Music

Hey, y’all! Merry Christmas and Happy Holidays!  If you can enjoy them – which let’s be honest – who even knows. There might be some new strain of murder-flu-hornets in the next 2 weeks.

Instead of totally saying fuckitall, I’m developing a playlist. Because that’s what you do when things are shit. It’s what you do when they’re good too, so either way, I’ll be prepared.

I rooted out seven songs to find some Christmas cheer. See if you can figure when the whiskey started kickin’ in.

Trans-Siberian Orchestra – “Christmas Eve / Sarajevo”

TSO is a key part of ZROCK Christmas traditions – selling out arenas across the country during the Holiday Season. Due to the pandemic, this year we had to settle for the livestream performance.  We look forward to the live experience returning in 2021.

My Chemical Romance – “All I Want For Christmas Is You”

This song gets my emo Christmas heart pumping and that’s awesome. They basically took this perpetual smash hit by Mariah Carey (originally released in 1994  and turned it into what I imagine the Christmas songs in Jack’s version of Christmas would have been, had he been successful in his coup in the ‘Nightmare Before Christmas.’ But I digress. Do you dig it or think it’s still intolerable?

Queen – “Thank God It’s Christmas”

Queen just has a way of hitting me in the feels and *keeping* me there. Are you there Freddy? It’s me. I love you. This rendition of “Thank God It’s Christmas” is perfectly done. Soulful and full of melancholy, Mercury sails through these bars like it is nothing. A perfect song for a chilly evening with a piping hot cup of cocoa (mostly Bailey’s). That’s the dream.

Lynyrd Skynyrd – “Christmas Time Again”

Lynryd Skynyrd’s smooth sound was a great match for this tune. A softer rock sound with a hint of yearning, playing right into the Christmas genre, this anthem can fit in with other classic songs like “Little Drummer Boy” and pull its weight. Perfect for a slow dance in front of the fire (holding your pet or your significant other) would be the best way to enjoy this song, I think.

Blink-182 – “Won’t Be Home For Christmas”

AH! Blink! I actually hadn’t heard this before, but you best believe it has been added to my Christmas emo playlist. Mixing their style with the backbone of most Christmas songs (sadness) they were able to create something only capable of this crew. This song makes me want to change into my elf costume and cause minor chaos around my town.

AC DC – “Mistress For Christmas”

A lil’ Christmas ditty for the single fellas!

Small Town Titans –  “You’re A Mean One, Mr. Grinch”

This was by far my #1 Christmas song I uncovered. Wow. What a great cover! This is on par with the dude who has the really deep voice who sings this (*checks notes* Thurl Ravenscroft,) and is such a replayable interpretation of this classic. I’m showing it to all of my friends, it was so good.

I loved listening to all of these gems, new and old. Rock music continues to be versatile and enjoyable no matter the season or topic. These five excellent hits are an example of that. What did you think of the Small Town Titans’ cover? Do you have another favorite from this list that deserves some love? If you have a favorite song send it my way.
