Concert Review for Alice Cooper Saturday July 15 at the Star Plaza Theatre in Merrillville by Mike Paine
I'm Eighteen and I LIKE it! OK so I'm not eighteen anymore, but I thoroughly enjoyed Alice Cooper just as much as the first time I saw him back when I really WAS eighteen! The Star Plaza Theatre was the perfect intimate concert setting providing relief from the summer heat in my own comfy seat. Not that I used it all that much..I was standing from the opening moments of the show while the band emerged in white masks playing Wicked Young Man then sprinkling in a couple of songs from his latest release Dirty Diamonds including Woman Of Mass Distraction & the title track. Drummer Brent Fitz (Theory Of A Deadman) more than filled in for Eric Singer who has a touring commitment with Kiss in Japan. Fitz excelled in his drum solo following the instrumental track Black Widow. Alice Cooper did not disappoint longtime fans as he serenaded a snake, experienced his demise via guillotine only to return in trademark top hat & tails then shelling out balloons during School's Out. My appetite for Cooper staples Billion Dollar Babies, Welcome To My Nightmare, No More Mr. Nice Guy, and Under My Wheels was also happily fulfilled. Alice's talented daughter Calico Cooper is an integral part of the show and a focal point in the dark yet sometimes humorous story. You have to admire an artist who played well over 20 songs complete with full stage show with the energy and creativity of bands half his age. Opening act The Vacation struck me as an angry version of the Black Crowes but didn't inspire the audience much. Lead singer Ben Tegel was writhing wildly onstage and running out into the seats. The audience was as diverse as any I've seen with fans young and old enjoying the rocking musical theater confidently delivered by the masterful originator of the genre. So next time "School's Out" and Uncle Alice is in town, go see the show and feel like "I'm Eighteen" all over again!
